Telemetric ICP Measurement
Indications of Telemetric ICP Measurement
In addition to using catheters to measure intracranial pressure for acute indications, it may, depending on the clinical assessment, also be necessary to measure the ICP (intracranial pressure) for an extended period. Possible indications are among others Pseudotumor cerebri and hydrocephalus. Here the production and absorption of CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) is unbalanced.
In order to monitor the symptoms in hydrocephalus patients with a conventional catheter, the patient must remain in bed. This is a significant disadvantage for the examination. Monitoring the ICP while the hydrocephalus patient is moving and changing her/his position provides important insights for the treatment of the symptoms.
Information about the ICP is crucial for a successful and sustainable treatment. It will be the decision-making basis for the type of therapy to be applied. For example, whether a patient needs a shunt valve, or how to best adjust the shunt valve for draining the CSF. Both over or underdrainage too much and too little drainage should be avoided.
By evaluating the patient’s ICP during various activities the shunt valve can be optimally adjusted to the patient's requirements, which significantly reduces the number of procedures on the patient's shunt valve.
Wireless ICP Measuring
RAUMEDIC has developed an innovative and unique system based on telemetry, which offers an alternative to traditional cable bound ICP monitoring catheters which connect to a monitor. The telemetric pressure catheter NEUROVENT-P-tel is fully implanted below the scalp on the cranial bone and collects ICP measurements in the parenchyma.
The telemetric system measures the ICP using microchip technology which transfers the pressure values wireless to a reader (Reader TDT readP) through the closed scalp using validated RFID principles.
The RAUMED Home ICP is used for the patient`s home. From there, the ICP values can be recorded continuously and during individual activities. The device is lightweight and easy to use.
The RAUMED NeuroSmart and MPR 1 DATALOGGER is used for the inpatient area and can record and save the measured ICP data for the patient`s time in the clinic.
Advantages of the Telemetric ICP Measurement
- Wireless communication with the fully implanted telemetric catheter
- Data recorded with the RAUMED Home ICP, RAUMEDIC MPR 1 DATALOGGER or RAUMED NeuroSmart
- Mobile patient monitoring in an inpatient or outpatient field
- Minimal risk of infection
- Reduction of hospital stay
- Telemetric catheter can be implanted for up to 3 months
