Hello Nico, how do you spend your free time?

I am a very active person. I've been playing handball for years and I'm also a coach for one of our youth teams. That's why you can often find me at the one or other handball game on the weekend. To balance out my office life, I also do weight training in the gym or go for a walk occasionally. Apart from that, I also like to deal with new, interesting IT topics in my free time or do my mini-job as an IT specialist / web developer.

What are the tasks of an IT specialist for system integration?

First of all, there are the following different specializations in the apprenticeship of IT specialists:

  • Application development
  • System integration
  • Data and process analysis
  • Digital networking

An IT specialist for system integration is responsible for planning and configuring IT systems. This includes setting up and installing software and hardware components, operating systems and networks.

Tasks also include setting up a workstation with telephone and company laptop. Setting up the laptop with the required programs and updates is also part of my job. Furthermore, I am usually the first point of contact in the company for everyday computer problems.

What can you tell us about your apprenticeship at RAUMEDIC?

At RAUMEDIC, we offer the specialization of systems integration. This is a dual training program that lasts a total of 3 years. The prerequisite for this profession at RAUMEDIC is a good secondary school leaving certificate.

My weekly working hours are 40 hours and 40 minutes. The special feature at RAUMEDIC is that I get four more vacation days per year for the 40 minutes of extra work per week. Instead of 30 vacation days, I thus have 34 days available. I like to use these for spontaneous short vacations to Austria or Spain.

There are no fixed department changes in IT. The team is divided into the following four areas: Security, Infrastructure, SAP and Corporate Applications. I get insights into each area and am assigned tasks from the different areas. This gives me an additional insight into the entire company.

How often and where do you visit the vocational school classes?

I visist the Vocational School 1 in Bayreuth. There I have a total of 12 full weeks of school per apprenticeship year. In the first two years of my apprenticeship, the lessons and subjects are identical for all IT specialists. I have subjects such as IT technology, IT systems, application development and programming, as well as general education subjects such as English and German.

In the third year of the apprenticeship, the various specializations differ in their teaching. The IT specialists for systems integration then focus more specifically on the subjects of IT technology and IT systems. At the vocational school, I have both theory and practical lessons. The modules that are first covered in theory I then apply in practice.

What does a typical working day look like for you?

Different tasks and new challenges await me every day. I have to deal with both longer-term project work and day-to-day business. The day-to-day business includes processing tickets, among other things. If our employees have IT problems, for example network problems, they can call a hotline or send an e-mail and a ticket is created for each case via a system. These tickets are then assigned within the IT department so that they can be processed as quickly as possible, thus solving the employee's problem.

Longer-term project work includes, for example, the programming of a self-developed IT warehouse system or the further development of the sites. This includes the introduction of new, improved software or hardware.

What did you like about the application process at RAUMEDIC?

What I particularly liked about the application process was that I was allowed to spend a day getting a taste of everyday working life and getting introduced to the team. I was asked where I got my IT knowledge from and I was given the task of naming individual parts and reinstalling a computer.

Furthermore, I had to install various basic programs and translate a manual into English. After the trial day, there was a final interview in which I was praised for my existing IT knowledge.

What interest or skills should you have for the IT specialist apprenticeship?

In any case, you should have an interest in IT and in working with computers on a daily basis. You should be prepared to deal with the theory of computer science. It is important to be open to new challenges and have the courage to ask a lot of questions. Because that is the be-all and end-all in any training.

Why did you decide to train at RAUMEDIC?

As a medical technology company, RAUMEDIC is very future-oriented. In addition, as a company we contribute to the well-being of people every day and save lives through our work. That convinced me.

What makes the training at RAUMEDIC special for you?

The special thing about my apprenticeship as an IT specialist for system integration is the varied daily work routine. You get to know new things and technologies every day. As a trainee, I am considered a full member and my colleagues also listen to my opinion.

I also get responsibility for my own projects and am even allowed to take over project management. For example, I was given project management for my own idea. Together with all the apprentices, I'm creating an intranet page about our training here at RAUMEDIC with lots of information and contact persons.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

I really like the fact that I learn something new every day and that I can support my colleagues with IT problems. I also have the opportunity to contribute ideas for process optimization and develop new applications to replace paperwork. For example, by developing my digital warehouse system. However, a little chat among colleagues at the coffee machine is also important to me.
