If you’re in doubt about whether you can do something like this, just do it! Lisa Rank

Hi Lisa, can you briefly introduce yourself?

My name is Lisa Rank, I’m 41 years old, married, and a mother of three. I’ve been working at RAUMEDIC in Muenchberg as a Quality Manager since 2020. This year, I took part in the expat program at our site in Mills River, North Carolina, from March to June.

What motivated you to work in the US for multiple months?

I’m a dual citizen. I’m both a United States and a German citizen. So, I’ve always been interested in experiencing American culture and work life. I’ve also always been a working mother, but never really went on business trips. Therefore, I was more than happy for this opportunity and experience.

How did your family react when they heard of your plans?

My husband supported me right from the start. It used to be that my husband went on many business trips while I stayed home. But this time, everything just worked out regarding his job – so we switched roles. My husband was taking care of our kids, the household, our dog, and our horse – and even my mother, who is in need of care. I really appreciate his support!

What did your everyday working life in the US look like?

The working atmosphere is great, and we all got along very well. Even after the working day, we all liked to spend time together – both the locals as well as us, the expats. Personally, I could fully focus on my work since I don’t have the same responsibilities outside of work that I do have in Germany. So, when I felt like it, I put in some extra hours.

So, there are definitely differences between the US and Germany. What stood out to you?

I expected that our site in Mills River would be a small copy of our site in Helmbrechts. And, while the German location is used for inspiration and guidance, structures and processes are quite di erent. The US site is also a lot smaller than the headquarters in Helmbrechts. This allows you to not only quickly get an overview of the whole branch, you also directly and personally feel the impact of the rapid growth and the many changes taking place.

You seem to be really excited about your stay in the US and appear to recommend it to others. Is there something you’d like to tell your colleagues who are thinking about going abroad?

I want to say something to all women in particular: If you’re in doubt about whether you can do something like this, just do it! Don’t let yourselves be held back by traditional gender roles. There’s always a solution, and, in the end, it will only be good for you. We all should show our children that it’s not only the dads who go on business trips or work abroad. My little daughter, for instance, is now proudly telling everyone at school that her mom has worked in the US.
