The telemetry system developed by RAUMEDIC offers a completely new approach to checking the intracranial pressure in patients suffering from hydrocephalus syndrome. It is the world-wide first cordless ICP pressure measurement system with which for the first time the intracranial pressure can be measured in the mobile inpatient who is under stringent medical monitoring. Now the decision can be made on the implantation of a shunt valve on the basis of data, which are obtained from "all situations in life". In addition, the ICP values gathered objectively over a longer period of time permit ideal setting of the shunt valve within a very short period of time.
RAUMEDIC developed the telemetry system in co-operation with renowned partners of industry and the Neuro-Surgical University Clinic Centre of Homburg / Saar under the management of Professor Steudel. The telemetry system was employed for the first time in the middle of 2010 at the University Clinic Centre of Homburg / Saar (Professor Steudel, Professor Kiefer) and at the University Clinic Centre of Mainz (Dr Tschan, Professor Wagner, Professor Oertel).
The data of ICP are of enormous importance for a successful and long-lasting hydrocephalus therapy. Firstly, the decision as to whether a patient needs a shunt valve is made on this basis. Secondly, given an existing shunt valve the liquor drainage is set on the basis of the ICP values, which assist the quick and correct setting of the shunt valve. An overdrainage or underdrainage of the liquor may lead to severe cerebral damage which can now be avoided. On account of the quick optimisation of the shunt valve, the period in hospital is reduced considerably.
Fitted with the micro-chip catheter, the sensor tip including the complete electronic is located in the parenchyma of the patient and the plate-shaped ceramic housing is placed on top of the dome of the cranium. The catheter is implanted completely below the scalp which thus acts as a natural infection barrier. The patient remains completely mobile within the description. The catheter transmits the data to an especially developed recording unit - the MPR 1 DATALOGGER - by means of RFID technology. The MPR 1 DATALOGGER saves the data, which are passed on to a separate PC / laptop computer or the clinical data documentation system by means of a USB connection. The intracranial pressure module thus permits monitoring outside of the intensive care ward under normal strain. After the measurement, the probe is explanted again in a small intervention.
On account of this new technology, the quality of life of the patient is improved. At the same time, the treating doctor receives real values on the various strain situations by the mobility of the patient, and thus can adapt the therapy in an ideal manner.
